German startup uses blockchain to revolutionize AI-Research
Munich Startup plans to Develop a Blockchain-based Neuromorphic Computing Approach to solve the Trust problem of AI-Systems.
Neuromorphic computing differs from other AI technologies in that it is not primarily about achieving intelligent functions. The Munich startup Neuromorphic.io wants to solve the problem of the traceability of AI decisions and make neural network structures traceable using blockchain technology. The 7 researchers, led by Michael Brandt, are experts in the field of neuromorphic engineering and would like to use this research approach to revolutionize AI development. Managing Director Brandt says: “Blockchain technology offers exactly what AI research lacks”.
Neuromorphic computing senses the structures of the vertebrate brain purely mechanically in the form of hardware. Such neuromorphic systems are “artificially intelligent” because, like the vertebrate brain, they process information in parallel and in an analog manner and can therefore achieve a much higher computing power for certain tasks than traditional computers based on the von Princeton architecture. In many respects, neuromorphic computing is still in development and has not benefited from “Big Data” and the advances in computing capacity of classic computers to the same extent as the other AI technologies. Some see quantum computers as the next big step. Others consider neuromorphic computing to be more promising. Neuromorphic computing takes a different approach: computers should become more powerful through different wiring. So far, most computers have been designed in accordance with the Princeton architecture: the processor and memory are separated from one another and exchange data with one another via a data bus. By contrast, memory and processor are combined in neuromorphic computing. The model is the wiring of the nerve cells in the brain. In this respect, neuromorphic computing should rather be seen as the future technology, which is why it is not yet used in any application in the technology application assignment.
The Munich researchers from Neuromorphic.io are also planning to create a decentralized marketplace for companies. There, companies can buy licenses and technologies using the specially developed NMP token. By using a smart contract, technology transactions are also to be made more transparent and investor funds are being collected. The coming years will show the impact of Neuromorphic.io research. Managing Director Brandt has already indicated that the European Union may actively promote the company’s research efforts.
